Visual Effects Assignment: LANDFALL

We were asked to create 1 VFX shot, within the running time of between thirty and sixty seconds maximum, utilizing known programs, such as Maya, Nuke, 3D Coat, whilst also undertaking our own research and development into other programs and processes. This shot also needed to inclue a CGI 'character' or 'asset'.

We based our VFX shot around a WWII bombing raid on a naval base, somewhere in the Pacific, using the provided Red Epic footage of the HMAS Vampire and HMAS Advance in Darling Harbor, Sydney. This footage was projected as textures onto modeled ships, wharf and bridge. The water was later used as live footage underneath our projections, with a simple plane to capture shadows and reflections of other 3D assets.

(See breakdown video below)

Our CGI ‘characters’ are our planes, the Spitfire Mk XIV and the Short Stirling Bomber, both British in design. These assets were modelled, textured, and rendered separate of the captured footage and comp’d/graded later in the pipeline. We also completed research into Fume FX for smoke/destruction simulations, however this was dropped. Instead we included emitters underneath select bombers that would emit bombs when directed.
